The Complete Drawing Practice
Product description
The Drawing Practice is a simple, structured way to actually practise drawing, without the
pressure or overwhelm of figuring out how.
It was made for anyone who wants to get better but isn’t always sure where to start.
Developed over three previous editions, this is the first complete printed version, bringing the
refined system and variety of subject matter together in one place.
Inside, you’ll work through a series of carefully chosen references, each drawn multiple times
using timed studies. You begin with a “baseline” drawing at the start and return to it at the end,
so you can clearly see your progress on the page.
The aim is to build your skills gradually through rhythm and repetition, helping you learn how to
see more clearly and improve in a steady, consistent way.
How it works
The journal is made up of 6 chapters, covering a range of subject matter, with images that
gradually increase in difficulty as you progress.
Each exercise is built around drawing the same reference image four times, with increasing time
limits.
You begin with a 10 minute study, working broadly and focusing on the main shapes and
relationships.
You then redraw the image for 15 minutes, adjusting proportion and tone as you start to notice
more.
A third 20 minute drawing allows you to slow down further and refine your observation.
Finally, you complete an open study without a timer, applying what you’ve learnt at your own
pace and giving yourself the freedom to spend longer refining and developing the drawing.
Repeating the same image helps you understand what you’re seeing more clearly. Each
drawing builds on the last, while the timed structure keeps you moving and prevents
overthinking.
